Author's Note | Lotus River is a work paying respects to Yasi and was inspired by ‘Lotus Leaves’ (蓮葉), his series of 14 poems: ‘Leaf Contact’, ‘Leaf Pity’, ‘Leaf Watching’, ‘Leaf of Passage’, ‘Neighbouring Leaf’, ‘Leaf Nostalgia’, ‘New Year Paintings’, ‘Streetlamp and Tin Leaf’, ‘Staining’, ‘Leaf Ripples’, ‘Leaf Enchantment’, ‘The Distinguished Leaves’, ‘Leaf on the Edge’, and ‘Leaf Crown’.Through the use of new media, and computationally generated in real time, the poems of the series are rearranged into a continuous stream of Chinese characters and lotus leaves. With an autonomous behavioural system, non-deterministic automation, and an independent acting approach, the audience communicates with the lotus leaves by stepping in the river. |
