Sulphur Channel and Green Island

Green Island is seen on the right. Between Green Island and Hong Kong Island, Sulphur Channel was named after H. M. S. Sulphur, by which Captain Edward Belcher landed on Hong Kong Island in 1841. The bay facing the western end of the Island was subsequently named Belcher Bay; Belcher Fort and Belcher Battery were constructed by the British on the slope nearby. Today the name Belcher Bay is almost forgotten, but the site of Belcher Battery and Belcher Fort turned into Belcher Garden in the 1950s. This residential area was demolished in 1996 for redevelopment.
