The Master Festival
Legend has it that the founding masters of Guangcai porcelain were Yang Kuai and Cao Kun, who went from Jingdezhen to Guangzhou to teach the art of porcelain painting, and so Yang Kuai’s birthday—the fourth day of the eighth lunar month—was designated as Master Festival. Each year on this day, porcelain factories would host banquets and set off firecrackers for celebration, attendees included all factory workers and their families, and even residents and merchants in the neighbourhood were invited. This custom went with the industry to Hong Kong and sustained for a period.
