The job of colour matchers is to mix the pigments to get the right colour, and require specialized knowledge about the chemistry of the pigments to get the job done. The colour matchers come up with their own secret formulas for the colours that they will not share even with the owners of the factories. Before the introduction of machinery, the colour matchers have to grind the pigments themselves with mortars and pestles, porcelain factories sometimes hire colour matchers from outside.
Kiln masters have to possess specialised knowledge about operating the kilns, and are responsible for setting the painted pieces into the kiln, firing the kiln and controlling the temperature by adding and removing charcoals before taking the porcelain pieces out at the end. Controlling the temperature and observing the fire is vital to the firing process, it is not uncommon for factory owners to be the kiln masters themselves.
As kiln firing represents the final stage of production, kiln masters often apply gold paint to the edges of pieces while setting them in the kiln. This practice reduces the risk of damaging the gold trim.
