The accelerating pace of urbanisation in the New Territories from the 1970s onwards, and the exodus of the farming population, led to a decline in Hong Kong’s agricultural industry.

KAAA kept in step with this social change. In 1995, KAAA evolved to become the Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden Corporation (KFBG).

Just as KAAA had risen to the challenge of the refugee crisis over 60 years ago, today, KFGB actively responds to the two greatest challenges to human survival in the world: the end of the age of cheap oil, and climate change, by promoting the adaptation of localised and low-carbon lifestyles.

One of the many ways in which the KFBG cultivates community resilience to these challenges, is through a range of programmes that promote organic farming and low carbon lifestyles.

KFBG transformed the historic site of the Old Tai Po station into an inspiring educational facility. The “Green Hub”, opened in 2015, houses a Farmer’s Market, Low-carbon Canteen and Community Shop; and runs a series of educational workshops on healthy and sustainable cooking and teaches organic farming skills, amongst other community-based activities. The Green Hub is a place to connect to both built and natural heritage, and to people who care about a health planet and healthy lives.

Although the mission of the Kadoorie Farm has changed, the spirit of “Helping people to help themselves” is still very much alive.
