特藏戰前香港教育剪報簡介
Introduction

News reports of school events and activities, comments and discussion of education policies found in newspapers are significant sources documenting education history. They complement publications by government and schools, and fill the gaps and holes in fragmentary records kept in archives: Schools that have lost their records during Japanese Occupation could trace their annual reports, list of graduates, and speeches of the Governor, the principal and other guests of honour in the news. Furthermore, announcements of admission and examination, reports of inter-school sports competitions and ball games, and joint fundraising activities provide a broader view of student life beyond individual school histories. A selection of Chinese newspaper clippings from 1938 to 1941, recording news of ‘Overseas Chinese schools’, free schools for refugee children, students’ war relief fund-raising activities, are particularly collected to document the impact of the Sino-Japanese War on education activities in Hong Kong.

Newspaper Clippings deposited in this Collection include those on Events, Sports and Activities, Announcements and Advertisements, Education Administration and Policy, selected from English and Chinese newspapers.
