Vaccine Laboratory, Institute of Pathology, Medical and Health Department, Caine Lane, the Mid-Levels
At the end of the 19th century, bacteriological studies in Hong Kong were still underdeveloped. It was not until 1905 that a permanent Bacteriological Institute was constructed at Caine Lane. This elegant red-brick building was renamed the Pathological Institute after World War II. It continued to be used as a laboratory until the 1960s, and as a vaccine production centre until the 1970s, after which it was used as a medical store by the Department of Health until it was renovated in 1995 and officially opened as the Hong Kong Museum of Medical Sciences on 22 March, 1996.
