Signal Hill was also called Blackhead Point. The signal tower was built in 1907. In those days there was a copper "time-ball" apparatus. At one o'clock afternoon, the ball fell slowly along the mast. Ships in the harbour used to monitor the time from this signal. In 1933, radio was introduced to replace the old means.
