The Old Mental Hospital for women
The Old Mental Hospital for women was built in 1891. It was used as a quarters for the European nursing staff of the Civil Hospital (1846-1937) until the World War II. In 1941, since the nearby Victoria Mental Hospital was unable to accommodate more patients, the nursing quarter was turned into a mental hospital for women. It was left vacant during the Japanese Occupation. It may be used as an execution ground. It continued to function as such until the Castle Peak Mental Hospital opened in 1961, and switched back as a day treatment centre for psychiatric out-patients until 1971. In 2001, the government decided to demolish the building and rebuilt the Sai Ying Pun Community Complex.
