The former Hong Kong Benevolent Hall was established in 1851 to house the soul tablets of Hong Kong residents. In 1870, A hostel and charitable hospital were built on Po Yan Street after a sum of $30,000 was raised. From 1872 onwards, both Chinese and western medical services were available.
