Biography

WK Chan was born in Hong Kong in 1947. His native place was Dongguan, Guangdong. His father Chan Sui Wai was a famous draper in Guangdong and Hong Kong, and his uncle Chan Sui Kau was the founder of Yangtzekiang Garment Mfrs. He studied at three different primary schools, namely, Shek Kong, Ling Ying and Henrietta. When in Form 4, he went to Thailand and entered an international school. He studied in the USA after high school and majored in Industrial Engineering. He graduated from university in 1970, and, upon return to Hong Kong, joined the garment manufacturing factory run by the family as the manager of the Shirt Department. He was then transferred to Macau to take charge of Fabrica de Artigos de Vestuario under the same company. Since the 1970s, he had taken part in international negotiations on textile quota on behalf of Hong Kong and Macau. In the 1970s and 1980s, Yangtzekiang Garment Mfrs set up plants outside Hong Kong, and WK Chan looked for sites for setting up plants, visiting every third world country and treading their barren lands. Since the company’s productions were relocated to the Mainland in the 1980s, he frequented the Mainland for business negotiations and factory inspections. Recently he also went into the media business. He became a major shareholder of ATV in 2000.
