Former Forewoman, Hing Wah Battery Factory

Biography

Liu Kwai Ying, born in 1934 in her native place of Shunde, moved to settle in Hong Kong at the age of five to six. In the early post-WWII years, she was referred to a job at Hing Wah Battery Factory. She initially worked in several departments and handled procedures such as soaking, binding wires, and packaging. In the mid-1960s, she was promoted to become a forewoman of female workers. She resigned in around 1974, after which she worked for about a year at a toy factory and then retired in order to take care of her grandchildren. When she first arrived to Hong Kong, she lived with her family in Mong Kok. Hing Wah was also located on Mong Kok Road at that time. In the early 1950s, she married Mr Law - the factory’s mechanic. After the wedding, the couple lived in a tenement building in Mong Kok until they moved to Kai Ming Mansion in San Po Kong in the mid-1960s. In 1953 or 1954, Hing Wah was relocated to To Kwa Wan Road, and the couple worked there together for more than 20 years.
