Biography
Cheung Chi Ying’s father worked in a shipping company. His job was to assign duties to tallymen. When cargo ships arrived at Hong Kong’s harbour, tallymen supervised laborers moving goods to warehouses ashore. Ah Ying was familiar with the cargo transportation industry since he was a boy. After graduating from Form Five, he joined the shipping company which his father was working for. He was promoted step by step from a trainee to tallymen’s supervisor until retired. He understood well the work pattern and lifestyles of cargo workers, and the landscape of the seaside. In addition, since he lived near to the Jordan Road Ferry Pier, he remembered well the scenery of this environment (It was reclaimed and became today’s City Golf Club).
