Biography

Liu Chia Hui’s (Gordon Liu) original name was Xian Jinxi. His family’s hometown was in Gaoming County, Guangdong. Liu was born in 1951 in Hong Kong as his family’s youngest son. His father ran a business in art and craft exports. When Liu was small, he was ill-disciplined and his family was wealthy. He spent his primary and secondary school years at Salesian School in Shau Kei Wan. During secondary school, he started to learn martial art. After graduating from the fifth form in secondary school, he worked as a courier and later an office clerk. In 1973, he was invited by Lau Kar Leung to join the film industry and first appeared in the film Sha Chu Chong Wei (1973) as the lead male actor. In 1974, he joined the crew of Chang Cheh and was signed by Chang’s Film Co. to go to Taiwan and make martial art films. After returning to Hong Kong, he further appeared in a series of martial art films directed by Lau Kar Leung, including The 36th Chamber of Shaolin (1977), which brought him to stardom. Subsequently, he was signed by Shaw Brothers (Hong Kong) Limited. In 1986, he travelled to Taiwan once again to film TV dramas. When he returned to Hong Kong, he partnered with Norman Chui to form Attraction Film Co. Ltd. Since 1989, he has been appearing in TV drama series under a contract with TVB. He is now an international actor well known in Hollywood and India.
