In the closing years of the Ching Dynasty, China was plagued by corruption and rebellions. It also witnessed one of the most sensational intrigues and scandals in Chinese history – the assassination of Ma Hsin-i, the Provincial Governor by Chang Wen-hsiang, his lieutenant and sworn brother.It all starts with a robbery involving Chang Wen-hsiang and his friend, Huang Tsung, who clash with Ma Hsin-i. In the fight, Ma comes to realize that his two opponents are not only valiant but also skilled in martial arts. Hence he offers to make peace with them. He also tries to win their friendship by money, which is spurned by Chang, a noble exbandit. But Ma is attracted by pretty Mi Lan, Huang’s wife, who appears in the scene suddenly.Ma Hsin-i soon tries again and this time succeeds in persuading Chang and Huang to become his sworn brothers. Next they join hands to crush the revolt led by Yen Chen-feng. Then, Ma sits for imperial examination, and passes with honours. He becomes a high-ranking officer, and his followers, including Chang and Huang enlist under his banner; and fighting shoulder to shoulder, they quell the rebellion. The Emperor promotes Ma to the post of Provincial Governor.Meanwhile, an affair develops between Ma and Mi Lan, a vainglorious lustful woman. And in order to have Mi Lan all to himself, Ma sends Huang to lead an expedition to Huai Pei. Enroute, Huang is ambushed and killed by Ma’s man. Heartbroken and infuriated at the treachery of Ma, as well as the death of Huang, the faithful Chang assassinates the ambitious Ma.
