Revitalisation of Historic Buildings

Historic buildings are a symbol of our collective identity, as well as carriers of history and culture, having witnessed the territory’s changes and development. The revitalisation process involves not just renovating historic buildings, but also continuing and deepening their social function to reintegrate them into modern society.

In 2008, the Development Bureau launched the "Revitalising Historic Buildings Through Partnership Scheme". With subsidies from the government, non-profit organisations are encouraged to revitalise suitable government-owned historic buildings for creative use. The scheme has so far been launched in five phases, with a total of fifteen historic building revitalisation projects approved. Up to 2016, about 2.6 million people have visited the completed projects. Four of the projects received the Award of Merit or Honourable Mention in the “UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation”, including the “Tai O Heritage Hotel”, a revitalisation of the Old Tai O Police Station, the “YHA Mei Ho House Youth Hostel”, a revitalisation of the former Mei Ho House and the “Green Hub”, a revitalisation of the Old Tai Po Police Station, etc. Some private owners have also revitalised their historic buildings; for example, the “F11 Photographic Museum" has been revitalised from a Grade 3 historic building at 11 Yuk Sau Street, Happy Valley.

These revitalisation projects have put historic buildings to productive use, giving them a continuing role in our community and creating quality and diverse cultural space.
