Introduction

Fiona Wong has been working in Chai Wan for many years. Her work place is right next to a historical monument, but in spite of the proximity, she did not find herself drawn to it. She believes that an old house, apart from standing testimony to time, can also work as a link between eras.

“The primary function of a house is a place to live. But as time passes and with changing circumstances, it may also undergo certain subtle changes.” –– Fiona Wong

Law Uk is a Hakka village house dating back more than 200 years ago, the only remaining example of a village house from the old villages in Chai Wan. The ancestors of the Law family settled in this area during the Kangxi period (1662-1722) in the Qing Dynasty, and lived a life of frugality and hard work by farming and fishing. Law Uk Hakka House was declared a historical monument in 1989, and restored and converted into a folk museum.
