Hong Kong’s first satellite earth station goes into operation

On the morning of 24 September 1969, Governor David Trench presided over the inauguration ceremony for Hong Kong’s first satellite earth station. Located in Stanley, the facility had a satellite dish set up by Cable & Wireless Ltd that made instant viewing of overseas satellite images a reality for Hong Kong people. During the ceremony, the governor had a conversation with the British Ambassador to the United States, John Freeman, in Hong Kong’s first ever international video conference.
