This section contains 3 articles:

  1. Dr. Dan Waters’ “The craft of the bamboo scaffolder” gives a general description of different aspects of bamboo scaffolding in Hong Kong, including the training of scaffolders and some of the common uses of scaffolding. Dr. Dan Waters specifically contributes this essay about bamboo scaffolding for this collection under Hong Kong Memory Project. The photos used in the essay are selected from this collection with permission from the respective individuals or institutions.

  2. Professor Francis K.W. Wong’s book is a professional work on bamboo scaffolding targeted at professionals who have the responsibility to supervise the proper and safe execution of new or maintenance works on which bamboo scaffolding is used. Nevertheless, lay readers interested to find out more about the technical aspects of the subject will find it useful too. Permission for use is given by Professor Francis Wong.

  3. Major Edward Aldrich, of the Royal Engineers, arrived in Hong Kong in 1843 and was fascinated by the many uses of bamboo on construction sites. His article describes the erection of the Ordnance Buildings in 1846. One of them was later known asMurray Building, which, after standing at the junction of Garden Road and Queen’s Road East for over a century, was relocated to Stanley, where it now stands.
Source of the article: Major Edward Aldrich, R.E. (1849). “Description of Mat Covering Sheds used at Hong-Kong in the erection of the Ordnance Buildings, and of the mode adopted by the Chinese in Transporting and Raising Heavy Weights for these Buildings.” Papers on the Subjects Connected with the Duties of the Corps of Royal Engineers.
