On 7 October 1978, Governor Sir Murray MacLehose and Lady MacLehose arrived in Sha Tin by helicopter at noon to unveil the memorial plaque mounted at Grandstand I to commemorate the opening of the new racecourse. The Governor, accompanied by the Stewards, attended the ribbon cutting ceremony at the Winning Post. Immediately afterwards, the Governor dotted the eyes of a dragon at the forecourt, followed by dragon and lion dances performed by the Luk Chi Fu Martial Arts Federation.
