Waglan Island Lighthouse is Hong Kong’s oldest still functioning lighthouses sited out in the South-China Sea.

Unlike Gap Rock, the lighting apparatus for Waglan was manufactured by Barbier and Co of Paris for the Chinese Imperial Maritime Customs. The lighthouse started to operate in 1893.

Following the 99-year lease of the New Territories and outlying islands, from China to Britain in 1898, Waglan Lighthouse came under the direct control of the Hong Kong Government, commencing in 1901.

During the Second World War Waglan Lighthouse was extensively damaged by Allied bombing. It has been unmanned since 1989. It is used not only as a navigational aid but also as an outpost where weather information is collected and fed to the Hong Kong Observatory. Waglan Lighthouse has been declared an historical monument.
