Yan Jun

In the post-war era, Shaw’s urgently needed to re-establish its film industry, so it enlisted the cooperation of a host of film personality who had moved to Hong Kong from the Mainland. Yan Jun (1917-1980) was one of them. He had collaborated with Shaw & Sons since 1949 and had appeared in many Mandarin films. As he was so versatile and could handle diverse roles, including both hero and villain roles, he had acquired the name “Hero of Thousand Faces”. In 1953, he made the progression from acting to directing a number of films. The Grand Substitution (1965), which he directed and starred in, won the Best Film Award at the 12th Asian Film Festival. Yan Jun made a lot of valuable contribution to the production of many of Shaw’s wenyi (drama) and period films in the 1950s and 60s. In the 1970s, Yan Jun migrated to America. He died of illness at the age of 63 in 1980.
