Young Li Yueh is a master swordsman from a noble Ming Dynasty family. Because his father, a famous general with a great war record, refuses to bribe Prime Minister Chao Wen-hua, he is disgraced then executed. Li Yueh sneaks into Chao’s home and kills the corrupt official. With a price on his head, he had to escape and hide in a small town working as a groom under an assumed name.Even his fiance Liu Cheng-erh, does not know his whereabouts. The Liu manor is invaded one night by bandits. Their leader is Tu Hu, the younger son of Flying Fish Island chieftain Tu Ching-chiu. Young Tu and his men are routed when famous swordsman Fang Chun-chao comes to the Liu’s rescue. Fang fatally wounds Tu Hu.Fang stays with the Cheng-erh and teaches her martial arts; and, gradually falls in love with her. But she tells him she still loves Li Yueh. The gallant Fang starts out on his quest to find the missing Li.Fang arrives at a small town and meets Li Yueh and takes a great liking to the groom. They become good friends although Li manages to keep his identity secret. Innkeeper Shih Kan’s daughter Hsiao-mei has fallen for Li and she helps him keep the secret.Tu Hu dies after telling his father that Fang is the killer. Tu Ching-chiu dispatches his elder son Tu Lung and four assistants to hunt down Fang. Arriving at the small town, they find Fang.A duel to the death ensues. Fang is outnumbered but Li comes to his aid. All the bandits except Tu Lung are killed.Liu Cheng-erh, having left her home also in search of Li Yueh, saves Shih Hsiao-mei from Tu Lung. She is overjoyed upon learning that both Li and Fang are in town. But Li is afraid that the reunion will bring trouble to Miss Liu. He leaves the town without meeting her and goes to Flying Fish Island to settle the score with the Tus. Fang and Cheng-erh follow him to the island.In a protracted fight, Li manages to finish off most of the outlaws. Although he kills Tu Ching-chiu, Li is mortally wounded. Cheng-erh commits suicide.
