Fu Hung-hsueh (Ti Lung) is reputed to be the best swordsman in the empire, with Yen Nan-fei (Lo Lieh) as runner–up, followed by the five guardsmen of Kung Tzu-yu. In the space of a year, Fu has defeated Yen in two separate tournaments, but the victor twice spared the life of the vanquished. Both go to see a noted courtesan, Ming Yueh-hsin (Tanny Tien Ni), and learns from her that the ambitious Kung Tzu-yu in a bid to eliminate his rivals, including Fu and Yen, desires first to gain possession of the secret weapon - “Peacock Dart”. This secret weapon is currently in the custody of Chiu, the headman of the Peacock Mansion, who happens to be a friend of Fu. Fu and Yen immediately proceed to the mansion, where Chiu, sensing the sinister scheme of Kung Tzu-yu, intends to hand the secret weapon to Fu for safekeeping. But before Chiu can do so, he is ambushed by Kung Tzu-yu’s henchmen. In the ensuing battle, Chiu is mortally wounded by the enemies, although he succeeds in killing all of them. Before he dies, Chiu hands the secret weapon to Fu, instructing him to also take good care of his daughter, Chiu Yu-chen (Ching Li). Meanwhile, Ming Yueh-hsin mysteriously disappears. Fu asks his friends Tu to look after Chiu Yu-chen, while he and Yen go to see Kung Tzu-yu, in order to make a peaceful settlement. But Yu Chin, Ku Chi and other followers of Kung Tzu-yu constantly attack them, although without success. In one encounter, the attackers escape with Chiu Yu-chen as their hostage. Fu meets Ming Yueh-hsin unexpectedly in the Mountain Village, where she alleges she has kept Chiu Yu-chen, as ransom for the “Peacock Dart” Fu is allowed to leave with Chiu Yu-chen after he has handed the dart to Mrs. Kung; and Chiu quietly gives him the “Peacock Coat” which can give him protection. Fu then goes to meet Kung Tzu-yu for a final showdown, and it turns out that Kung Tzu-yu is none other than Yen Nan-fei. A fierce battle ensues between Fu on one side, and Yen and his henchmen on the other side.
