During the Ching Dynasty, unscrupulous dye-mill owner Wang Kao-feng engages Manchu thugs to persecute his employees. The workers hire their friend, skilled impersonator Chou Jen-chieh (Gordon Liu Chia-hui), to avenge them with threats of Shaolin kung fu. But his bluff is called and he is revealed as being a fake kung-fu master. Humiliated, he decides to set off for the Shaolin Temple to really learn the monks’ martial arts skills.Although entering the Shaolin Temple is difficult, Chou somehow manages to sneak in. He is quickly discovered, but the abbot, moved by Chou’s determined attitude, permits him to remain at the temple as a scaffolder. Chou is thus able, in the course of his work, to observe the secret training of the 36th Shaolin Chamber and absorb its skills.The scaffolding is finally completed and Chou must leave the temple, disappointed that, after all this time, he has still not officially mastered the skills of Shaolin.
