Inauguration of Kwai Chung Container Port

On the morning of 27 January 1973, Governor Murray MacLehose attended the inauguration ceremony of Hong Kong's first container terminal. Operated by Modern Terminals Ltd, the comprehensive port facilities were built on 37 acres of seabed and were designed to handle 120,000 containers every year that were dispatched on routes to the Far East and Europe. Its opening marked the beginning of a new era for Hong Kong’s shipping industry.
