Hong Kong People Use Hong Kong Products

In the 1st Exhibition of Chinese Products, the Chinese Manufacturers’ Union (CMA in short) has proposed the slogan of “Chinese people using Chinese goods”, requesting that participating manufacturers must stringently comply with product evaluation principles, i.e. exhibited products must be “made in China” and stated expressly so, and they must not use any counterfeit logos. Also, if the raw materials of a product are sourced elsewhere than China, it will not be eligible for exhibition.

In the 9th Exhibition of Hong Kong Products in 1951, CMA first proposed the slogan of “Hong Kong people use Hong Kong goods”, a campaign to encourage Hong Kong people to support local industries. However, as newspapers have pointed out, Hong Kong people have a preference for imported products over local goods and the exhibition had failed to achieve the long-term goal of promoting Hong Kong goods among local consumers. In 1967, the Federation of Hong Kong Industries and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council jointly organized the “Hong Kong Week” to promote goods produced by the local manufacturers. The CMA also took the opportunity to promote the idea of “Hong Kong people use Hong Kong goods” at the (25th) Silver Jubilee Exhibition of Hong Kong Products. Since then, all ensuing exhibitions focused on spreading this message and the slogan was publicized through advertisements, tapestry flags, and parade vehicles. A song was also created to promote the use of Hong Kong products among local consumers.
