Wong Hon Yee, whose ancestors were from Zhongshan, was born in Hong Kong in 1947. In his childhood, his whole family lived in one of the wooden cubicles in a flat in Sheung Wan. His secondary education was done in Chinese Y.M.C.A. Secondary School and La Salle College. After graduation from matriculation in 1966, he entered The University of Hong Kong to study in Faculty of Engineering with a major in electrical engineering. When he graduated in 1969, he was employed by Ampex Ferrotec Ltd., a US electronics factory, as an engineer. In September 1970 Wong went to University of California in USA for further studies in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. In early 1972 he returned to Ampex to take up the position of unit supervisor of the engineering department. It was in 1974 that he became the chief of the whole engineering department and reported directly to the US headquarters on product design work. Wong had been involved in the work of technology transfer for many years. As early as the 1970s he was sent to Scotland by Ampex to learn the manufacturing technology of Winchester Hard Drive. Then in the early 1980s he was sent to Japan to learn the audio-video technology. For many times, the products which were designed by him and others had won the “Governor’s Award of the Year” – the highest honour in the field. In 1992 Wong left Ampex to seek development in the academia. Since 1994 he has been working at Industrial and Business Development Office of City University of Hong Kong where his work is to facilitate communication between the academia and the industry.
