So Cheung Shing, David, former Chairman of Elec & Eltek International Company Ltd. (Elek and Eltek), talked informatively about the past and present of the electronics industry. In doing so, he not only described the major local companies and their products, he also discussed the conditions for developing high-tech industries in terms of policy, education and markets. Leveraging his engineering perspective, H. Y. Wong, a former manager of the Engineering Department of Ampex Ferrotec Ltd. (Ampex), outlined three kinds of operating modes used by local electronics companies: Original Equipment Manufacturing (OEM), OEM design and own-branded products.
