Grand opening of Hong Kong City Hall

Governor Robert Black presided over the opening ceremony of Hong Kong City Hall on the afternoon of 2 March 1962. Designed in the German Bauhaus style, the complex cost HK$20 million and took over two years to build. On arriving at City Hall, the governor first unveiled a plaque at the main entrance and then proceeded to the concert hall inside. There, he presented a scroll to the Director of Urban Services, Kenneth Kinghorn, to symbolise the handover of Hong Kong City Hall’s management to the council in accordance with the ordinance that had been enacted on 29 March 1961.
