Peter Chen Ho

Before joining Shaw’s in 1959, Peter Chen Ho (1931–1970) already had the reputation of being the “Saint of Comedy”. He, with a westernized appearance, was adept at both singing and dancing. Capitalizing on the great popularity of Hollywood style musical films, Shaw’s produced numerous films of the same genre. Peter Chen Ho was naturally the most sought-after chief male star of these films. He continuously collaborated with Shaw’s Japanese director, Inoue Umetsugu. In making modern dramas, he was also the perfect match with many first-rate actresses at that time. Many of the modern musical films produced by Shaw’s in the 1950s and 60s had Peter Chen Ho starred in important roles. These films included the more renowned Les Belles (1960), Stranger than Fiction (1961), Hong Kong Nocturne (1967), Four Sisters (1967), Sing High, Sing Low (1967) and Hong Kong Rhapsody (1968). In 1970, Peter Chan Ho died of illness at the young age of 39 in New York.
