In the wooded and mountainous district of Liang Shan, a group of courageous and patriotic knights unite to oppose the tyrannical dictatorship of a Ta Ming Fu garrison commander and his colleagues. The commander is Liang Chung-shu.When a knight called Chao Kai is killed by Shih Wen-kung while on a spying mission for their cause, the infuriated leaders of Liang Shan, which include Sung Chiang, Wu Yung and Li Kuei, plan their revenge. Their first move is to send Wu Yung and Li Kuei to win the confidence and friendship of wealthy Lu Chun-i – a known colleagues of Shih Wen-kung's. In doing this they intend to create a rift in the trust Lu Chun-i has for Shih, and through this discord, to break up the association of the two men, thus causing untold trouble for Shih.Lu Chun-i, however, soon discovers the identities of the disguised Wu Yung and Li Kuei. But knowing their connection with Sung Chiang, and knowing him to be an honorable man, Lu Chun-i treats them well.Lu Chun-i's wife is discontented and bored with the marriage, so she has an affair with home servant, Li Ku. Fully aware that his master is sheltering the outlawed Liang Shan knights, Li Ku informs Liang Chung-shu of the matter, and while he attempts to help Wu Yung and Li Kuei to escape, Lu Chun-i is arrested and put into the jail. Later, he is exiled to Sha Man island, he is rescued by his close friend Yen Ching, only to be recaptured soon after. Yen Ching seeks out Yang Hsiung and Shih Hsiu – both knights from Liang Shan, and requests them to help Lu Chun-i. But Shih Hsiu is captured during a daring attempt to rescue Lu Chun-i from the execution ground.Liang Chung-shu is afraid to kill the prisoners as he fears the revenge of the Liang Shan heroes. And he goes with troops to defend the city against a possible Liang Shan attack, aided by Shih Wen-kung.Wu Yung devises a new plan to rescue the prisoners by splitting up the Liang Shan forces into two groups, and attacking the soldiers from different directions. The plan works. The prisoners are rescued, and together with the knights, head for Liang Shan. But the frustrated Shih Wen-kung intercepts them. In the ensuing battle, Shih Wen-kung is killed and Chiao Kai's death is avenged.
