Summary

From the 1970s onwards, with the rising influence of several new film companies including Golden Harvest Limited, the competition among the film circuits accumulated to a climax. In the early-1980s, while Shaw’s Studios was reducing its production gradually, Shaw’s film circuit business contracted accordingly. In 1985, Shaw’s leased its four leading cinemas (Jade, Golden, Bonds, Rex) under its banner to D & B Films Distribution Company Limited. Finally in 1987, Shaw’s announced its decision to terminate film production. In the following year, it further leased the remaining film circuits to D & B Films Distribution Company Limited. From the mid-1980s, the business focus of Shaw corporation was shifted to the TV broadcasting field.
