Olympic torch arrives in Hong Kong

On the afternoon of 4 September 1964, the flame symbolising the 18th Olympic Games to be held in Tokyo arrived in Hong Kong from Manila, marking the first time that an Olympic torch relay had passed through the city. After it arrived at Kai Tak International Airport, seven athletes took turns carrying the torch across the harbour to Hong Kong City Hall. The torch bearer for the last leg was Hong Kong swimmer Cheung Kin-man, who ran into the concert hall and handed the torch to Governor David Trench. The governor then lit the cauldron, bringing the Hong Kong leg of the torch relay to a successful end.
