Gold Songs 40 You and Me

“It’s him, you and me…” there are always some heartfelt Chinese lyrics that reflect society of the time: Below the Lion Rock embodied the spirit of Hong Kong people, and the song Eiffel Tower Soared to the Clouds expressed the strong feelings of a generation born and raised in Hong Kong.

In 1977, RTHK launched Chinese Pop Chart. It originated from a segment New Horizons started by Cheung Man Sun in 1975 in the programme New Generation he co-hosted. New Generation modelled on pop music charts in the West and ranks the Chinese songs according to listeners' preference. The segment was renamed as Chinese Pop Chart in June 1977. Riding on the same theme, the first Top Ten Chinese Gold Songs Award was held at the Sheraton Hong Kong Hotel in February 1979 to reward contributions by music elites who had topped the Chinese Pop Chart. This became highly regarded in the Hong Kong music industry. In its early years, counting of vote for Top Ten Chinese Gold Songs Award was done live. With the advancement of technology, music fans from local and overseas could participate via the Internet, alongside public polls and professional ratings to strengthen the selection process.

The production of Top Ten Chinese Gold Songs Presentation Concert is meticulous. It has an exquisite appearance, from the stage design to the programme printout. The programme pamphlets became memorabilia of Hong Kong popular culture. Moreover, the guests invited on stage were all household names to guarantee a star-studded event. Over the years, the Top Ten Chinese Gold Songs Awards have not only promoted Hong Kong’s pop music culture, but also raised funds for many charities. Additionally, the awards have been held in cooperation with the Hong Kong Design Institute and the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education, giving students a practical chance to improve their concept of design.

As a public service broadcaster, RTHK promotes creative culture and let more people share this spirit. By inviting various electronic media to, either live or recorded, broadcast the presentation concert in locations including provinces in mainland China, Southeast Asia, North America, Britain and France, Hong Kong’s popular culture can be spread far and wide.

As RTHK enters its 90th anniversary, it is also witnessing its 40th Anniversary of Top Ten Chinese Gold Songs Award. Gold Songs 40 You and Me reminisces about the superstars and their unforgettable moments.
