Fun and Educational Programmes for Children
One of the early successes of RTHK TV Division was created through collaboration with the then Education Department (today’s Education Bureau). It produced Education TV programmes which were in line with school curricula. Today, many of the programmes have become collective memories of Hong Kong people, such as an animation comprising over 50 clay models of Virus Monsters, which had gone viral on the Internet.
Apart from Education TV, RTHK produces many programmes on civic education, such as promoting language learning. From the 1980s, RTHK has been producing English Through Songs, Everyday Putonghua, and English Made Easy and Chinese Made Efficient in the 2000s. The broadcaster also launched Doctor and You to boost medical knowledge; and Hong Kong Geographic and Nature and Man in One to promote environmental and conservation concerns. For continuous education, RTHK is committed to producing programmes on parent and child relationships and emotional well-being: from Parenthood Series in 1995 to Parenting and A Beautiful Mind in the 2000s, these aim to provide useful information for the public. In 2017, RTHK launched knowledge-based talk shows hosted by young scholars on literature, history and philosophy, such as Literature Night, History Night, Philosophy Night, Economics Night and Science Night, which seek to inspire the audience.
In the early days, RTHK produced programmes targeting pre-school children, such as Banana Boat Show in 1979, and then Music Time. Recently, RTHK has re-launched We are Good Neighbours with educational and fun local themes. The programme is well-received by both kids and parents as it includes elements such as music, storytelling and puppets.
