Lai Yiu Kai was born in 1939. He lived in Wan Chai during the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong and his primary school years. He studied in the privately-run Lai Kwan School. Later, he joined his father’s trade as a cement worker and transferredto the free evening school run by the Pun U Association.
