KC Shek (Sir Shek) was born in Kwong Wah Hospital, Hong Kong in 1948. He lived with his family in 74 Portland Street. Later they moved to Waterloo Road, Shanghai Street and Tung Choi Street, etc. Sir Shek called himself a ‘street kid’ when he was young. When in primary school, he had travelled on foot from Yau Ma Tei to places like Pek Ho Street, Sham Shui Po or Diamond Hill. His grandfather and granduncle worked as mariners when they were young. His father earned a living outside. His mother ran a porridge stall on an alley at the junction of Pitt Street and Portland Street. Besides, she was also a landlady. Shek Sir believed his family was better-off because he was granted 60 cents as pocket money each day while his primary schoolmates only had 10 to 20 cents. He liked treating himself a bar of Cadbury Chocolate! Indeed, he had to help his family in the their stall. Currently Sir Shek was an executive director of Hong Kong Economic Times Holdings Limited and also a financial expert.
