20th Century Hong Kong Painted Porcelains—Gangcai

Introduction

The Hong Kong Ceramics Research Society interviewed more than 20 gangcai practitioners between 2015 and 2023, including painting factory owners, managers of workshops, painting masters, colouring workers, kiln masters, owners of kiln factories, traders of gangcai, owners of blanks factories and distributors, researchers on gangcai and contemporary ceramic artists. They perform different roles in the gangcai industry and the oldest interviewee was over a hundred years old. The gangcai industry is dominated by male, with most business owners and painting masters being men, but there are also six women interviewed, they had experienced the highs and lows of the industry and were witnesses to the history in the development of the gangcai industry.


This gangcai oral history archive includes the textual records and video or audio records of the interviews. The textual records are transcript of the interviews in Cantonese, the following notations are used in the transcripts:

1. "…" indicates a pause;
2. "( )" indicates notes and remarks by the editor;
3. "……" indicates omission from the transcript;
4. "X" indicates names or information redacted as requested by the interviewees


The Hong Kong Ceramics Research Society compiled an introduction to technical terms on painted porcelain and an index of commonly used words specific to Cantonese to aid readers.
