Jimmy Wang Yu

In the mid-1960s, Shaw’s entered into the era of martial arts movies, witnessing the rise of a generation of heroic macho stars. Jimmy Wang Yu (1943-) was one of the outstanding representatives. In 1966, with his exquisite appearance and body movements, he was selected to play the leading role in Tiger Boy (1966), and he rose to fame with Temple of the Red Lotus (1965). In 1967, the film One-armed Swordsman (1967), in which he was the lead, grossed a record high box office of over HK$1,000,000. This enabled him to establish his position as Shaw’s prime male star for martial arts and action films. Jimmy Wang Yu left Shaw’s in 1971 and turned to Taiwan to further his career. Undoubtedly, he was a classic representative of the macho image portrayed in Shaw’s era of martial arts movies.
