Wang Yu (1955-2008) signed a contract with Shaw’s in 1972 and appeared in Facets of Love (1973), a movie directed by LI Han-hsiang. He then had a role in Lau Kar-leung’s The Spiritual Boxer (1975). His kung fu kid image together with elements of action comedy gave the audience a fresh new impression. Subsequently, he co-starred with Alexander Fu Sheng and Gordon Liu in many films, including Challenge of the Gamesters (1981), Kid from Kwantung (1982) and The Eight Diagram Pole Fighter (1984). The roles he played broke the tradition of Shaw’s martial arts films and successfully elevated small-timer characters to protagonists. Wang Yu died in 2008 at the age of 53.
