Inoue Umetsugu

Alongside the trend of the Huangmei Opera and martial arts movies, under the leadership and with the efforts of Doe Ching and Inoue Umetsugu (1923-2010), Shaw’s was able to develop the markets for musical and romance movies. Inoue Umetsugu joined Shaw’s in 1967. He could handle both directing and scriptwriting, and became the most famous Japanese director among those recruited by Shaw’s from Japan. Inoue Umetsugu got inspiration from Broadway musicals and Japanese movies, and he made numerous films with song and dance, youth and love as themes for Shaw’s. Examples of his works included Hong Kong Nocturne (1967), King Drummer (1967) and The Singing Escort (1969), all were very popular among young audience at the time.
