Shaw Studio

The history of Shaw Studios in Hong Kong dated back to 1934. In this year, Shaw’s predecessor, Tianyi Film Company, came and opened a studio in Hong Kong (Tianyi HK studio for short) by setting up filming facilities on Pak Tai Street in Kowloon. In its early days of operation, a reporter paid a visit to the filming facilities and wrote about the filming of Unworthy of Love, “Shaw Run-de and Shaw Run-me gave (the reporter) a tour of the different areas of the filming facilities. At the studio on the right, there was a set for use with western costumes. The set included a meeting room on the exterior. The decoration was quite splendid, and filming equipment could be seen everywhere. Over 10 pieces of lighting equipment spread in every direction - above and below; in front and in the back - and the whole area was lit like daylight … They had worked the whole day from 1:00pm to 9:30pm and had been filming for more than 8 hours by now. When we arrived, they had already completed a lot of shots. Soundproofing system was being set up at the studio on the left. And the film processing room, the film printing room, the screening room, the office and so on were all under construction”. This passage described the operation of the Pak Tai Street filming facilities, and was also a record of how Tianyi HK studio launched its Cantonese film production business.
