Native to Ninghai, Zhejiang, KL Sun was born in Hong Kong in 1953. His father Sun Kin-chiu was the founder of Kin Hip Metals & Plastics Factory. KL Sun graduated from Pui Ching Primary and Secondary Schools when he was a child. Upon completing Form 4, he furthered his studies in a high school in Canada, after which he majored Physics at Victoria University. Graduating from university in 1978, he returned to Hong Kong and took over the family business. He adopted modern management by delegating authority to his staff. After 1979, he led the shift of production into the mainland and the setup of production test point in Nanhai. In 1980, he founded the Kinox brand and boosted the competitiveness of the products in the retail market. In 1984, as Sun Kin Chao retired, KL Sun and his younger brother took over the whole of Kin Hip's businesses. In 1989 Kin Hip bought land as factory site in Pinghu, Shenzhen. The Pinghu factory was completed and production started in 1992; meanwhile the production lines in Hong Kong were closed. KL Sun started developing the business of electrical appliances in 1996. He focused on the development of high-end brands and products in recent years, outsourcing the production processes to mainland processing factories. KL Sun actively participate in public affairs. He had been Chairman of Federation of Hong Kong Industries.
