In June 1928, the then Hong Kong Government took over a non-governmental radio broadcasting body – Hong Kong Radio Society – to commence its broadcast services. With “GOW” as its call-sign, the broadcaster marked the founding of what is known today as Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK). RTHK has since broadcast socio-cultural information, witnessing people’s ever-changing lifestyles.
From radio and TV to online platforms; monophonic tracks and stereo to digital broadcast; black and white to colourised and high definition screens, Hong Kong’s broadcasting industry has continued to overcome challenges and evolved in tandem with technological advancement. In addition to providing information, education and entertainment to the public, it has advocated for local culture development, documenting trends and motions of Hong Kong through our happiness and bitterness.
This section features treasured historical photos from RTHK’s collection to showcase the development milestones of Hong Kong’s broadcasting industry, with reminiscences encompassing the rich variety of our lives, and to share our collective memories spanning almost a century.
