After joining Shaw’s, Kuei Chih-hung (1937-1999) was sent to the Shochiku studio in Japan for training. On his return to Hong Kong, he worked as assistant to Japanese Director Inoue Umetsugu. In 1970, he was promoted to the position of director, and made numerous market-oriented films. In the 1970s, he made reality action films such as The Teahouse (1974) and Big Brother Cheng (1975). He was very meticulous with his filmmaking and handled topics of a wide variety and topics which were the subject of controversy, such as crimes, occult incidents and the triad societies. Kuei Chih-hung made a number of alternative films for Shaw’s so that some HK critics regarded him as the “Pioneer of HK Cult Films”.
