King Hu

King Hu (1932-1997) was regarded by the media as one of the 3 most important martial arts film directors under the Shaw’s banner. He joined Shaw’s as actor-cum-scriptwriter-cum-assistant director in 1958. In 1964, he wrote and directed his debut film, The Story of Sue San (1964), which was a Huangmei Opera comedy film. In the same year, he made Sons of Good Earth (1965), which won him the 4th Golden Horse Best Screenplay Award. In 1966, the screening of Come Drink with Me (1966) was a box office success, and brought about the wave of new style martial arts films across the Southeast Asian region. In 1997, King Hu, at the age of 65, died as a result of a failed operation involving cardiac catheterization.
