About the Collection

The history of the Shaw enterprise is the history of Chinese cinema in a century of change. By adopting a model of “vertical integration”combining production, distribution and screening, the enterprise managed to keep pace with technological developments and utilize every new media that appears -- from cinema to television, from DVD to the Internet -- to screen its products. Its cultural and institutional evolution over the past 80 years profoundly reflects the changes of the times. The countless images created in Shaw movies form a crucial part of Hong Kong people’s collective memory, and help us appreciate Hong Kong's unique cultural heritage.

This Collection serves as a digital repository for the collection, preservation and dissemination of Shaw’s historical, cultural and artistic heritage. Materials in textual, graphic, audio and audio-visual forms are collected from multiple sources; a large portion of the materials are used with the permission of Celestial Pictures Limited.
