Chen Hung-lieh

Chen Hung-lieh (1943-2009) joined Shaw’s Southern Acting Training Class in 1962, and subsequently signed an actor’s contract with Shaw’s. In 1964, he became famous overnight with his villainy role, Jade-faced Tiger in Come drink with Me. Cheng Pei-pei and Yeuh Hua, who also starred in the same film, also enjoyed instant fame and popularity. Chen Hung-lieh was a rare example of an actor gaining fame by playing the villain. From then on, no matter in period or modern films, he always played the villains. The more renowned films he starred in included King Drummer (1967), The Rainbow (1968), The Trail of the Broken Blade (1967), Death Valley (1968) and The Winged Tiger (1969). In 2009, Chen Hung-lieh died of heart attack at the age of 66.
