Szeto On

Before joining Shaw’s in 1976, Szeto On (1927-) was already one of the most sought-after scriptwriters of the Cantonese film circle of Hong Kong. As the scripts he wrote were attractive, filled with ingenious plots and twists, they were most welcomed by different directors. Besides writing his own original stories, he also produced numerous adaptations with inspiration from novels and traditional folk tales. For instance, he adapted Ku Lung’s novel into The Magic Blade (1976) and a folk tale into Emperor Chien Lung (1976). Szeto On had also written a number of scripts which reflected social reality, including The Teahouse (1974) and The Criminals (1976). These films helped Shaw’s develop its mystery and reality film series.
